Cables hold everything. The main cables run over two tall towers and are anchored deep into the ground at each end, holding up the entire bridge deck with vertical suspender cables like puppet strings.

Ancient and modern. Simple suspension bridges made from rope or vines have been used in mountainous regions for centuries, but the fancy steel versions we see today started being built in the early 1800s.

Weight stays balanced. The towers and cables are designed so that heavy weight gets spread out evenly, which is why suspension bridges can stretch across really wide spaces without sagging in the middle.

Famous for long spans. Suspension bridges are perfect for crossing huge gaps like wide rivers, bays, or deep valleys because the cable design lets them be really long without needing extra supports underneath.
