Cool Facts
Strokes are patterns. A swimming stroke is a repeating motion you do with your arms and legs to move forward through the water. Each stroke has its own rhythm and style, like a dance.
Many different styles. There are lots of swimming strokes to learn, including freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. Each one works different muscles and feels totally different.
Propels you forward. The whole point of a stroke is to push water behind you so your body moves forward. Think of it like pushing against invisible walls with your arms and legs.
Needs good technique. Learning the right way to do a stroke helps you swim faster and not get tired as quickly. Coaches teach swimmers to move their arms and legs in precise patterns.
Used in competition. Swimmers in races use specific strokes, and different strokes are used for different distances and events. Olympic swimmers practice their strokes thousands of times to be the best.
