Playing card game origins. Tarot cards weren't always about fortune-telling. Starting in the mid-1400s in Italy, people played trick-taking card games with them, similar to how we play games like Hearts or Spades today.
Italian roots spread everywhere. From Italy, tarot games traveled across Europe and changed in different countries. Germans created Grosstarok, the French developed French Tarot, and Austria created a version called Königrufen.
Special deck structure. A tarot deck has more cards than a regular playing deck and includes unique cards called Major Arcana that other card games don't have.
Games evolved over centuries. As tarot cards moved from country to country, people invented new rules and styles of play, turning them into many different games that are still played today.
