Five different tones. Thai uses five distinct tones to change the meaning of words. The same syllable can mean completely different things depending on whether you say it high, low, rising, falling, or flat. It's like music built into every sentence.
Official language of Thailand. Thai is the only official language of the entire country of Thailand. Millions of people speak it every day, from busy Bangkok to quiet villages.

Unique curved script. Thai writing uses its own special alphabet with beautiful rounded letters that look completely different from English. There are no capital letters, and spaces between words work differently than in English.
Spoken by many groups. While the Central Thai people speak it as their main language, it's also used by the Mon, Lao Wiang, and Phuan people. Thai Chinese people throughout the country speak Thai as well.
Part of a language family. Thai belongs to the Kra-Dai language family, which includes several other languages spoken across Southeast Asia and southern China. It's related to languages spoken by millions of people in the region.
