Wrote the Declaration. Thomas Jefferson was the main author of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, which announced that America wanted to be free from British rule. This document explained why the colonists believed they had the right to be independent.

Third President. Jefferson served as president from 1801 to 1809 and made important decisions that shaped the young nation. One of his biggest achievements was buying the Louisiana Territory from France, which doubled the size of the United States.

Built Monticello. Jefferson designed and built his own home called Monticello in Virginia, which was an amazing architectural achievement for its time. The house reflected his knowledge of design and his love of learning.
