Wrote the Declaration. Thomas Jefferson was the main author of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, which announced that America was breaking free from British rule. This document explained the ideas behind why the colonists believed everyone deserved freedom and equal rights.

Third President. Jefferson served as president from 1801 to 1809 and worked to expand the United States and strengthen democracy. He famously made the Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the size of the country.

Brilliant Thinker. Jefferson was a prolific writer and philosopher who believed strongly in democracy, education, and the power of ideas. His way of thinking about government, called Jeffersonian democracy, shaped how America developed.

Major Contradiction. Despite writing that all people deserve freedom and rights, Jefferson enslaved over 600 people during his lifetime and never freed most of them. This deep contradiction between his words and his actions is a painful and important part of his story.

Curious Mind. Jefferson was interested in many subjects beyond politics, including science, architecture, gardening, and Native American history. He designed his own home, Monticello, and filled it with inventions and collections that showed his wide curiosity.
