Massive Bronze Giant. The Big Buddha is made of bronze and stands 34 meters tall (about 11 stories high), making it one of the largest seated Buddha statues in the world. It took over a decade to plan and build before completion in 1993.

Sits Near a Temple. The statue sits high on Lantau Island at a place called Ngong Ping, right next to the Po Lin Monastery. Monks have lived and studied at this monastery for centuries, making it a deeply spiritual location.

Built with 202 Pieces. Because the statue is so enormous, workers had to build it in 202 separate bronze pieces and fit them together like a giant puzzle. This careful construction took incredible skill and planning.

Reached by Cable Car. Visitors take a scenic cable car ride up the mountainside to reach the Big Buddha, offering beautiful views of the island below. The journey up is almost as memorable as seeing the statue itself.

Symbol of Peace. The Buddha sits in a calm, meditative pose with one hand pointing upward and one pointing downward, symbolizing the connection between heaven and earth. Millions of people visit each year to find peace and reflect.
