Massive Maya City. Tikal was one of the largest cities built by the ancient Maya people, with thousands of people living there in the past. The city thrived for over a thousand years before it was mysteriously abandoned.

Lost in the Jungle. For centuries, Tikal was buried and hidden by the thick Guatemalan rainforest, so no one lived there. Archaeologists eventually found and studied the ruins to learn about Maya civilization.

Amazing Architecture. The Maya built enormous stone pyramids, palaces, and temples at Tikal without using metal tools or wheels. Some pyramids stand as tall as a 20-story building!

Sacred Location. The ancient Maya likely called Tikal by the name Yax Mutal, which means 'First Place' in their language. The city was probably a sacred and important ceremonial center for the whole region.

Protected Today. Tikal is now protected as Guatemala's national park and was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. Visitors from all over the world come to explore the ancient ruins.
