A natural mineral. Topaz is a silicate mineral made of aluminum and fluorine that forms deep in the Earth. It's one of the hardest gemstones people use in jewelry.

Many beautiful colors. Topaz is usually colorless when it first comes out of the ground, but tiny impurities in it can make it pale blue, golden, or yellow-orange. Some of the most prized topaz gems are brilliant blue or pink.

Heat changes colors. Jewelers can use heat or radiation to transform topaz into deep blue, reddish-orange, pale green, pink, or purple. This makes the gem even more dazzling and valuable.
