Living for ages. Trees are perennial plants, which means they live for many years, sometimes for hundreds or even thousands of years. Some trees can live longer than entire civilizations.
Trunks and branches. A tree has an elongated stem called a trunk that usually supports branches and leaves. The trunk gets thicker over time as the tree grows taller and stronger.
Many different kinds. Trees come in many forms, from the tiny palms and tree ferns to giant bamboos and bananas. Some scientists define trees narrowly as only woody plants, while others include many more kinds of tall plants.
Useful for lumber. Some of the most important trees are ones people can use for lumber to build houses and furniture. These trees are valued for their strong wood that comes from their trunks.
