Six branches exist. The United States has six armed forces: the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard. Each branch has its own special role and area of focus.

Two main departments. Five of the branches (Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force) are run by the Department of Defense. The Coast Guard is different because it works for the Department of Homeland Security during peacetime.

Army protects land. The Army is the largest branch and focuses on land-based military operations and defense.

Navy controls oceans. The Navy protects American interests at sea and keeps the oceans safe for trade and travel.

Space Force is newest. The Space Force is the youngest branch and was created to protect American interests in space and handle military operations from above Earth.
