How it works. A vacuum cleaner uses a motor to create suction, which pulls air and dirt through a tube into a container or bag. The dirt gets trapped while clean air gets pushed back out.

Cleans many surfaces. Vacuum cleaners can work on carpets, tile floors, hardwood, and other surfaces. Some models even have special brushes that spin to agitate carpets and loosen stubborn dirt.

Powerful suction power. The strength of a vacuum's suction is what determines how well it picks up dirt. Stronger motors create more suction, making it easier to clean thick carpets and hard-to-reach corners.

Different types exist. There are upright vacuums for big jobs, handheld vacuums for quick cleanups, robot vacuums that work by themselves, and shop vacuums for bigger messes. Each type is designed for different cleaning needs.

Bag or bagless. Some vacuums collect dirt in replaceable bags, while bagless models use a container you empty out. Both ways keep dirt and dust from floating back into the air.
