Virginia Opossum

Plays dead brilliantly. When a Virginia opossum gets really scared, it flops over and plays dead so perfectly that predators leave it alone. Scientists call this behavior 'thanatosis', and it works because most hunters want fresh prey, not something that looks already dead.

Lives farthest north. Virginia opossums are the only marsupials that live north of Mexico, ranging all the way from southern Canada down to Central America. This makes them super tough survivors in cold climates where most marsupials couldn't survive.

Nocturnal night walker. These animals are active only at night when they hunt for food, and they're completely solitary except when mating. By sleeping during the day, they avoid most predators and heat.

Eats almost everything. Virginia opossums are opportunistic eaters, which means they'll munch on fruits, insects, snakes, carrion, and garbage. This flexible diet helps them survive in many different habitats from forests to cities.

Cat-sized marsupial. An adult Virginia opossum weighs about as much as a domestic cat and has a pointed snout, hairless tail, and white face fur. Despite their somewhat creepy appearance, they're actually gentle and rarely bite.
