W.E.B. Du Bois

First Black PhD. W.E.B. Du Bois was the first African American to earn a doctorate degree from Harvard University, one of the most prestigious schools in the world. This was a huge accomplishment at a time when Black people faced severe discrimination in education.

Powerful writer. Du Bois wrote many influential books and articles that helped people understand the struggles Black Americans faced. His ideas shaped how people thought about race, identity, and freedom for generations to come.

Pan-Africanism leader. Du Bois believed that Black people around the world, including those in Africa, the Caribbean, and America, should support each other. He worked to connect Black communities across different countries and continents.

Teacher and scholar. Du Bois was a professor at Atlanta University, where he taught and conducted important research on society and history. He spent his career studying how people lived and worked, using knowledge to fight injustice.

Moved to Ghana. In his final years, Du Bois moved to Ghana in West Africa, showing his commitment to connecting with the African continent. He died there in 1963 at age 95.
