Founded the Green Belt Movement. Wangarĩ Maathai started this organization to plant trees across Kenya and help protect the environment. The movement also gave women jobs and a voice in their communities.

Won the Nobel Peace Prize. In 2004, she became the first African woman ever to receive this incredibly important award. The Nobel Committee honored her for fighting for the environment, democracy, and women's rights all at the same time.
