The Say Hey Kid. Willie Mays earned his nickname because he would greet teammates by saying "say hey," and it stuck with him throughout his incredible baseball career.

Five-tool superstar. Mays could do it all: hit for power, hit for average, steal bases, catch anything in center field, and throw out runners. This combination of skills made him nearly unstoppable.

From Negro leagues to fame. Mays started his career playing for the Birmingham Black Barons in the Negro leagues before joining the New York Giants in the major leagues, helping integrate professional baseball at its highest level.

Defensive wizard. Mays was famous for his incredible catches in center field, including one of the most famous plays in baseball history where he ran down a long fly ball with his back to the batter.

23 seasons of excellence. Mays played 23 seasons in the major leagues for the Giants and New York Mets, becoming one of the most decorated and respected players in baseball history.
