Empire's Only Female Ruler. Wu Zetian was the only undisputed female sovereign in all of Chinese history. She ruled China from 690 to 705, leading one of the world's largest empires during this time.

Rose From Young Wife. She started as a young woman in the imperial palace and gradually gained power over decades. First she was empress consort, then empress dowager, and finally sole ruler of her own dynasty called Zhou.

Changed the Dynasty Name. When she became the supreme ruler, she didn't just take over the Tang dynasty. Instead, she created her own dynasty called the Zhou dynasty to show that her rule was a fresh start.

Ruled for 15 Years. Wu Zetian held complete power over China from 690 to 705, making decisions about the government, laws, and the empire's future. This made her one of China's longest-ruling individual monarchs.

Incredible Achievement. In a time when women had very limited power, Wu Zetian became the most powerful person in the entire empire. Her rise from the palace to sole ruler shows remarkable intelligence and determination.
