Incredible long toes. The African jacana has unusually long toes and claws that spread its weight across floating plants so it doesn't sink. It's like nature gave it built-in snowshoes for water.

Walks on water plants. Instead of diving or swimming like most water birds, the African jacana walks directly on lily pads and other floating vegetation in shallow lakes. This lets it hunt for food in places other birds can't reach.

Found all over Africa. The African jacana lives throughout sub-Saharan Africa wherever there are shallow lakes and wetlands with the right floating plants.

Loves shallow wetlands. These birds prefer shallow lakes and swampy areas where floating vegetation is thick and abundant, making the perfect place to walk and feed.

Specialized wader. The African jacana belongs to the jacana family, a group of waders specially adapted to walk on water plants in ways that other water birds simply cannot do.
