African Sacred Ibis

Holy bird of Thoth. In ancient Egypt, this ibis was sacred to Thoth, the god of wisdom and writing. Egyptians believed the bird carried divine knowledge and treated it with deep respect.

Long-legged wader. The African sacred ibis is a wading bird with long, thin legs that help it walk through shallow water and wetlands to hunt for food. It belongs to a family of birds called Threskiornithidae.

African and Middle Eastern. This ibis lives across much of Africa and in small parts of Iraq, Iran, and Kuwait. It thrives in places with water where it can find fish, frogs, and other small creatures.

Vanished from Egypt. Even though the African sacred ibis was so important to ancient Egyptians, it has completely disappeared from Egypt today. Scientists are still studying why this sacred bird is no longer found there.

Distinctive curved beak. The African sacred ibis has a long, curved beak that curves downward, perfect for probing into water and mud to catch small animals.
