Preventing collisions. Air traffic controllers use radar to track where every airplane is and make sure each one has enough empty space around it so planes don't crash into each other.

Radio communication. Controllers talk to pilots using radio signals to give them directions, tell them when they can take off or land, and warn them about other aircraft nearby.

Weather challenges. Thunderstorms, strong winds, and fog can make it harder for controllers to do their job, sometimes causing planes to change their routes or land at different airports.

Pilots stay in charge. Even though controllers give instructions, the pilot is always the final decision maker and can break the rules if it's needed to keep their plane safe.

All types of aircraft. Air traffic control helps commercial passenger planes, military jets, and small private planes all share the sky safely.
