Ancient magical experiments. Alchemy started thousands of years ago in Egypt, China, India, and the Muslim world. Alchemists mixed mysterious substances, heated them in special vessels, and tried to unlock nature's deepest secrets.
The search for gold. One of alchemy's most famous goals was turning common metals like lead into shiny gold. Though they never succeeded, alchemists invented many laboratory tools and techniques that real chemists still use today.
Mystical and sacred. Greek-speaking alchemists called their work 'the Art' or 'Knowledge,' and they treated it like a sacred, almost magical practice. They believed understanding these transformations could reveal deep truths about the universe.
Proto-science pioneer. Though alchemy mixed magic with science, it was one of the first attempts to understand how materials work and change. Many discoveries from alchemy helped birth modern chemistry as we know it today.
