A key to life. The ankh looks like a cross with a circle or oval loop on top, kind of like a key. Ancient Egyptians called it the 'key of life' because it represented life itself and all its mysteries.

Written in hieroglyphics. Egyptians used the ankh symbol in their sacred writings and carvings to spell the word 'life.' It was one of their most important hieroglyphic symbols alongside the cartouches that held pharaohs' names.

Pharaohs and gods. Pharaohs and Egyptian gods were often shown holding ankhs in their hands. This showed that they had the power to give or control life itself.

In tombs and temples. You'll find ankhs carved and painted all over Egyptian tombs, temples, and burial objects. Egyptians believed the ankh symbol could protect people in the afterlife.

Still famous today. Even though ancient Egypt ended thousands of years ago, people today still use the ankh as a symbol of life, spirituality, and African heritage.
