Crashing cosmic dancers. The Antennae Galaxies are two galaxies smashing into each other in a slow-motion collision that triggers an amazing burst of new star creation. When their clouds of gas and dust collide, it's like the perfect recipe for making stars.
Starburst party. Right now, the Antennae Galaxies are in a starburst phase, meaning they're creating stars at a super fast rate. All that crashing gas and dust getting squeezed together makes the perfect conditions for brand new stars to be born.
Tangled magnetic fields. The galaxies have magnetic fields that get all twisted together during the collision, which helps the gas clouds crash and mix. These entangled fields act like invisible guides that help steer the colliding material.
Historic discovery. A famous astronomer named William Herschel spotted the Antennae Galaxies way back in 1785 using his telescope. They're located in the constellation Corvus, which you can see in the night sky.
Named for their shape. These galaxies got their cool name because their long tails of gas and stars stick out like the antennae of an insect. The collision pulls material outward, creating these distinctive antenna-like structures.
