Cool Facts
Impossibly Long Neck. Argentinosaurus was a sauropod, which means it had a super long neck for reaching leaves high up in trees. Its whole body was as long as three school buses parked end to end.
Heavier Than Elephants. This dinosaur weighed between 65 to 80 tons, making it about as heavy as 14 African elephants combined. That is almost unimaginably heavy for a single animal that walked on land.
Puzzle From Fragments. Scientists only know about Argentinosaurus from broken fossil pieces, not a complete skeleton. Even from these fragments, they could tell it was one of the largest dinosaurs that ever lived.
Late Cretaceous Star. Argentinosaurus lived during the Late Cretaceous period, the last age of the dinosaurs, in what is now Argentina. Titanosaurs like this one were the biggest plant eating dinosaurs of that time.
Gentle Giant Herbivore. Despite its enormous size, Argentinosaurus was a peaceful plant eater that spent its days munching vegetation. Its long neck let it feast on plants that other dinosaurs could not reach.
