The Asante Empire

Ruled for centuries. The Asante Empire lasted from 1701 to 1902, which means it governed its lands for over 200 years. That's longer than the United States has existed as a country.

Enormous territory. The empire started in the Ashanti Region and grew to cover most of modern-day Ghana, plus parts of neighboring Ivory Coast and Togo. At its peak, it was one of the largest kingdoms in West Africa.

Military powerhouse. The Asante were known for their strong army and military skills, which helped them expand their territory and defend their kingdom from enemies.

Wealthy and cultured. The Asante became very rich through trade networks and built impressive architecture and art. Their organized government and complex society made them stand out among African kingdoms.

Well-documented history. More historical records were written about the Asante Empire than any other African kingdom south of the Sahara Desert, mostly by European and British writers, so we know a lot about how they lived.
