Cool Facts
Leaves change color. When autumn arrives, deciduous trees stop making the green color in their leaves and reveal beautiful yellows, oranges, and reds underneath. This happens because the trees are getting ready to rest for the cold winter ahead.
Days get shorter. As autumn progresses, you'll notice the sun rises later and sets earlier each day. This keeps happening until the winter solstice in December, when the day is at its shortest.
Temperature cools down. Autumn brings noticeably cooler air after the warmth of summer, which is why people start wearing sweaters and jackets. The temperature keeps dropping as winter approaches.
Seasonal transition. Autumn is one of Earth's four main seasons and marks the change from hot summer weather to cold winter weather. In the Northern Hemisphere it starts around September, while in the Southern Hemisphere it begins around March.
Nights grow longer. As autumn continues, the nights get longer and longer while the days shrink shorter and shorter. This change happens all season long until winter officially begins.
