Spoken by millions. Bengali has over 242 million people who speak it as their native language, plus another 43 million who speak it as a second language. That makes it one of the top languages in the entire world.

Where it's spoken. Bengali is mainly spoken in the Bengal region of South Asia, which includes parts of India and Bangladesh. You'll also find Bengali speakers in Assam and Tripura.

Ancient and classical. Bengali belongs to the Indo-Aryan family of languages, which means it's related to languages like Hindi, Punjabi, and Urdu. It has a long and rich history.

Called by two names. People who speak Bengali often call it Bangla instead. Both names mean the same thing and are used by native speakers today.
