Blue or purple berries. Blueberries are round berries that grow on perennial flowering plants, which means the same plant comes back year after year to produce more berries.

Native to North America. All the blueberries we eat today, whether wild ones from low bushes or bigger cultivated ones from high bushes, originally came from North America.

Traveled to Europe. During the 1930s, people brought highbush blueberry varieties from North America to Europe, where they became popular too.

Part of Vaccinium family. Blueberries belong to a special plant group called Vaccinium, and within that group they're known as Cyanococcus.
