Cool Facts
What is bowling?. Bowling is a sport where players roll a heavy ball down a long, smooth lane to hit wooden pins at the end and knock them over. The goal is to knock down as many pins as possible in each turn.
Where it happens. A bowling alley is a special building or room designed just for bowling. Some bowling alleys are their own standalone buildings, while others are tucked inside clubhouses, community centers, or even people's homes.
The lane setup. Each bowling lane is made of smooth, polished wood or synthetic material that lets the heavy ball roll straight and fast. At the far end of each lane stand ten wooden pins arranged in a triangle shape, waiting to be knocked down.
The bowling ball. Bowling balls are heavy spheres, usually weighing between 6 and 16 pounds, with three finger holes drilled into them. Players choose a ball that feels good in their hands and roll it down the lane to send it toward the pins.
Scoring points. When you knock down all ten pins with one or two rolls, that's called a strike or spare. Players keep track of their score and try to beat their own record or compete with friends.
