Bran Castle

Built by Saxons. In 1377, King Louis I of Hungary gave German Saxon settlers permission to build this fortress. They chose a dramatic spot on a mountain to watch over the border between Transylvania and Wallachia.

Guards a mountain pass. Bran Castle sits right on the historical border between two regions. This made it the perfect watchpost to keep an eye on trade routes and travelers crossing between kingdoms.

Still standing today. More than 650 years later, Bran Castle is still there on its rocky hillside. Romania protects it as a national monument because it tells the story of medieval times in this part of Europe.
