Crunchy sugar shell. Candy apples are whole apples covered in a hard, glossy candy coating made from sugar, water, and red food coloring. When you bite through the crispy shell, you get the juicy apple underneath.

Fall festival favorite. Candy apples are super popular at autumn celebrations like Halloween and Guy Fawkes Night because these festivals happen right after apples are harvested in autumn. People love walking around festivals with one in hand.

Not the same as caramel. Candy apples and caramel apples might look similar, but they're actually made in totally different ways. Candy apples have a hard, candy-like coating, while caramel apples have a sticky caramel layer instead.

Stick for holding. A wooden stick is pushed into the top of the apple before the candy coating goes on, so you have a handle to hold it without getting your fingers all sticky and sweet.
