Fairy chimney rocks. Cappadocia has thousands of tall, pointed rock formations that look like cone-shaped hats or castle towers. These unique shapes were created over millions of years when volcanic eruptions left soft ash and rock that wind and water slowly carved into these fantastic forms.

Underground cities. Ancient people dug entire cities underground in Cappadocia, with homes, churches, storage rooms, and passages carved deep into the soft rock. These hidden cities could hold thousands of people and protected them from invaders long ago.

Rock-cut churches. Early Christians carved beautiful churches and monasteries right into the rock faces of Cappadocia, decorating them with colorful paintings and religious symbols. Some of these churches are over 1,000 years old and you can still see the artwork inside.

Volcanic landscape. Cappadocia sits in the middle of Anatolia where ancient volcanoes erupted millions of years ago. The volcanic ash and lava cooled into layers of soft stone that made it perfect for carving homes and cities.

Hot air balloon rides. Today, people visit Cappadocia to float over the fairy chimney rocks in hot air balloons at sunrise, which gives an amazing view of the entire magical landscape spread out below.
