Caravans: Ancient Trade Groups

Desert travelers. Caravans were groups of people who traveled together across deserts and along trade routes, often using camels to carry heavy goods and supplies. These journeys could last weeks or months.

Safety in numbers. Traveling in a caravan was much safer than going alone, because bandits were less likely to attack a large, organized group. The group could defend themselves together if danger appeared.

Profitable trading. By traveling as a caravan, merchants could share the costs of travel and protection, making their goods cheaper to sell. This meant everyone in the group made more profit on their journey.

The Silk Road. Caravans traveled famous trade routes like the Silk Road, which connected Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. They carried silk, spices, metals, and other treasures between distant cities and civilizations.

Community effort. A caravan included not just merchants but guides, guards, pack animals, and support staff who all worked together. Everyone had an important job to keep the journey safe and successful.
