Years of study. To become a lawyer, people must complete college and then attend law school for three more years. After that, they take a difficult exam called the bar exam to prove they know the law.

Speaking in court. One of a lawyer's main jobs is to represent clients in court, which means arguing their case in front of a judge and jury. Lawyers present evidence and make arguments to help their clients get a fair outcome.

Writing important documents. Lawyers draft contracts, wills, and other legal papers that protect people's rights and clarify what everyone has agreed to do. These documents must be written carefully so there is no confusion later.

Giving legal advice. People hire lawyers to explain what the law means and what their options are in tricky situations. A lawyer helps clients understand their rights and what could happen if they choose different paths.

Many different types. Some lawyers handle criminal cases, some work with families on divorces, and others help businesses make deals. There are also lawyers who fight for people's rights and lawyers who protect the environment.
