Invented by Lou Ottens. A clever Dutch engineer named Lou Ottens and his team at the Philips company created the cassette tape and introduced it to the world in August 1963. It was a breakthrough because it made recording and playing music portable and personal.

Magnetic tape magic. Cassette tapes used a thin magnetic strip inside a plastic case to record sound. When you pressed play, a machine would read the magnetic patterns and turn them back into music or voices you could hear.

Shared with everyone. Instead of keeping the cassette invention secret, Philips let other companies make and sell cassettes too starting in 1966. This generous choice helped cassettes become the world's favorite way to listen to music for over 30 years.

Music on the go. Cassettes changed how people enjoyed music because they were small, affordable, and durable. You could carry your favorite songs in your pocket, share tapes with friends, and record your own music at home.
