Cool Facts
Where it started. Cheddar cheese comes from the village of Cheddar in Somerset, England. People have been making cheese there for hundreds of years, and the name stuck with the cheese forever.
Orange or pale. Cheddar can be off-white or pale yellow, but sometimes makers add color to make it bright orange. The color doesn't change the flavor, just the look.
Sharp and tangy. Some Cheddar is mild and creamy, but older Cheddar tastes sharp and a little bit tangy. The longer it sits and ages, the stronger and crunchier it gets.
Hard and firm. Unlike soft cheeses that spread easily, Cheddar is naturally hard and firm. You can slice it, cube it, or grate it onto food.
Famous worldwide. Cheddar became so popular that people now make cheese in this style all around the world, even though the original comes from that one village in Somerset.
