Cool Facts
Home to most corals. More than 76% of the world's shallow-water reef-building coral species live in the Coral Triangle, and some areas have 500 different types of corals in a single region. That makes it the most coral-filled place in the entire ocean.
Biggest marine treasure. The Coral Triangle is so full of life that scientists call it the 'Amazon of the seas.' It's about 5.7 million square kilometers of ocean waters stretching across six countries around Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Solomon Islands, and Timor-Leste.
Sea turtle hotspot. Six out of the seven species of sea turtles in the world live in the Coral Triangle, making it one of their most important homes. You won't find that many sea turtle types together anywhere else.
Fish paradise. The Coral Triangle contains 37% of all the fish species that live on coral reefs worldwide. That's tens of thousands of colorful fish swimming through these waters.
Feeds millions of people. The Coral Triangle provides food and income to over 120 million people and brings in about $3 billion in money from visitors each year. Its marine resources are worth roughly $1.2 trillion per year.
