Separates fibers fast. A cotton gin removes cotton fibers from their seeds incredibly quickly and easily, which means much more cotton can be processed than if people did it by hand.

Ancient Indian design. Simple handheld roller gins were already being used in India around 500 A.D., showing that people have been trying to solve this problem for over 1,500 years.

Worm-gear innovation. Around the 1600s, an improved version called the Indian worm-gear roller gin was invented, and it worked so well that people still use almost the exact same design today.

Seeds have value too. The cotton seeds that get separated aren't wasted, they can be planted to grow more cotton or pressed to make cottonseed oil for cooking and other uses.
