Mega-tall tree. The Douglas fir is the tallest species in the entire pine family, and some of these giants reach skyward for hundreds of feet through the forests of western North America.

Three different types. There are three varieties of Douglas firs, each suited to different regions: the coast Douglas-fir (the tallest), the Rocky Mountain Douglas-fir, and the Mexican Douglas-fir.

Always green. Douglas firs are evergreens, which means they keep their needle-like leaves year-round instead of dropping them in winter.

Western North America home. These magnificent trees are native to western parts of North America, where they thrive in cool, moist climates.

Many nicknames. Over the years, people have called the Douglas fir by different names, including Douglas spruce, Oregon pine, and Columbian pine, even though it's actually a fir in the pine family.
