Dwarfs in Germanic Folklore

Master Craftsmen. Dwarfs are known throughout old stories for being incredibly skilled at making things, especially magical items and treasures. They work with their hands to create wonderful crafts that appear in many legendary tales.

Mountain Dwellers. In most accounts, dwarfs live deep inside mountains or hidden within stones beneath the earth. Their underground homes are where they do their crafting work away from the rest of the world.

Mostly Male Characters. In the earliest stories about dwarfs, only male characters are mentioned by name. Later on, storytellers began including female dwarfs too, and they mentioned that male dwarfs had sisters and daughters.

Shape and Size. While people often think of dwarfs as being very short, scholars who study old stories say that being small wasn't always the most important part of describing them. Their magical powers and skills mattered more than their height.

From Germanic Tales. Dwarfs come from the folklore and legends of Germanic peoples in Northern Europe. These stories were passed down through generations and appear in many old sagas and written sources.
