Cool Facts
Roots to eat. Many plants store food underground in their roots to help them grow. We dig up carrots, potatoes, and turnips to eat these nutrient-packed storage organs.
Leafy greens everywhere. Lettuce, spinach, kale, and cabbage are all leaves we can munch on. Leaves make food through photosynthesis, so they're packed with energy and good stuff for your body.
Spices and herbs. Plants like black pepper, cinnamon, basil, and oregano add amazing flavors to cooking. Many spices come from seeds, bark, or dried leaves that have strong tastes and smells.
Nuts and seeds. Seeds from plants like almonds, sunflowers, and pumpkins are crunchy snacks full of healthy oils and protein. These seeds would grow into new plants if you planted them.
Surprising flowers. Some flowers like nasturtiums, pansies, and zucchini blossoms are totally edible and pretty on a plate. They add color and unique flavors to salads and fancy dishes.
