Sits on solid rock. Edinburgh Castle stands on Castle Rock, which is so old that people have lived there since the Iron Age, thousands of years ago.
A royal home. Kings and queens of Scotland lived in Edinburgh Castle starting around the 11th century, making it one of the most important palaces in the country.
Became a fortress. After the 1600s, the castle stopped being a royal residence and turned into a military garrison where soldiers were stationed to protect Scotland.
Rebuilt and restored. In the 1800s and beyond, people realized how important Edinburgh Castle was to Scotland's history, so they fixed it up and made sure it would last for future generations.
