A Golden Ruler. The original El Dorado was a South American king who covered his entire body in gold dust as part of a sacred ceremony, then washed it off in a holy lake.

Lost City Legend. Spanish explorers in the 1500s heard these tales and became obsessed with finding a whole hidden city made of gold somewhere in South America.

Never Actually Found. Explorers spent hundreds of years searching the rainforests and rivers for El Dorado, but the legendary city was never discovered because it only existed in stories.

A Name that Changed. Over time, people stopped thinking El Dorado meant just the golden king and started imagining it as an entire kingdom overflowing with treasures beyond imagination.

Inspired by Truth. The legend likely came from real Muisca and other South American peoples who had actual gold-working traditions and sacred rituals near mountain lakes.
