Music Box Magic. Inside the toy is a special music box mechanism that plays a melody when you turn the crank. The most famous song is "Pop Goes the Weasel," which opens right at the moment when the word "pop" should be sung.

Clown or Jester. When the lid finally pops open, out jumps a colorful figure, usually a silly clown or jester dressed in bright clothes. The sudden appearance is meant to make you laugh and jump with surprise.
