Shape-shifting character. Baba Yaga appears as two completely different characters across different stories. Sometimes she is a scary old woman who fries children, and other times she is a kind witch who helps heroes on their quests.

House with legs. She lives in a hut deep in the forest that stands on giant chicken legs and can walk around. This strange home is one of the most famous details about Baba Yaga in all of Slavic folklore.

Flying in a mortar. Instead of a broomstick like many witches, Baba Yaga flies through the air while standing inside a wooden mortar (a bowl used for grinding). She steers herself with a pestle, which is the stick you use to grind things in a mortar.

Forest dweller. Baba Yaga lives deep in wild forests and is closely connected to nature and forest animals. Many stories show her surrounded by the creatures and magic of the woodland.

Very old legend. Baba Yaga comes from ancient Slavic folklore, the traditional stories told by people in Russia, Ukraine, Poland, and nearby regions for hundreds of years.
