Eleanor of Aquitaine

Queen of Two Kingdoms. Eleanor was Queen of France first, then Queen of England after she married King Henry II. She ruled alongside her husbands and later her sons, making her one of the most influential people in all of Europe.

Duchess of Aquitaine. Eleanor inherited the Duchy of Aquitaine, a huge region in southwestern France that was incredibly wealthy and powerful. This made her one of the richest people of her time, even before she became queen.

Mother of Kings. Eleanor had several children who became kings, including Richard I (known as Richard the Lionheart) and John of England. She helped rule England when her sons were in charge, giving her even more power and influence.

Patron of Culture. Eleanor loved art, music, and storytelling, and she supported poets and artists at her court. She helped spread the idea of courtly love, a romantic style that influenced how people wrote and sang about love in the Middle Ages.

Ruled for Decades. Eleanor stayed powerful and involved in ruling from 1137 until her death in 1204, an incredible span of nearly 70 years. She showed that women could hold real political power, even in medieval times.
