Converts motion to power. An electric generator takes mechanical energy like spinning wind or falling water and transforms it into electrical energy that flows through wires to light your home.

Spinning creates electricity. When a generator's shaft rotates, it moves magnets and coils of wire past each other, creating an electric current that we can use to power everything from toasters to hospitals.

Powers the whole world. Nearly all the electricity on Earth comes from generators powered by different sources like wind turbines, water dams, steam engines, and even hand cranks.

Invented by Faraday. British scientist Michael Faraday created the first electromagnetic generator called the Faraday disk in 1831, which became the foundation for all modern generators.
