What makes them endangered. Species become endangered when their habitats are destroyed, people hunt them illegally, new invasive species arrive in their environment, or climate change makes their homes unsuitable. Sometimes several of these problems happen at the same time.

The IUCN Red List. Scientists around the world use a special list called the IUCN Red List to track which species are in danger. It helps governments and conservationists know which animals and plants need the most help right now.

Laws that protect them. Many countries have created laws that make it illegal to hunt endangered species or destroy their habitats. Some governments create protected areas like national parks where these creatures can live safely.

Saving them through science. Scientists use special techniques like captive breeding (raising animals in zoos or facilities) and habitat restoration (rebuilding their natural homes) to help endangered species recover and bounce back from the edge of extinction.
