Acid Does the Work. Etching uses strong acid or special chemicals to carefully eat away parts of metal (usually copper or steel) where an artist hasn't protected the surface. This creates grooves that hold ink for printing.

Ancient Art Form. For hundreds of years, etching was one of the most important ways artists made detailed prints. Famous old masters like Rembrandt used etching to create incredible detailed pictures that could be printed many times.

Modern Tech Secret. Today, etching is super important in making computer chips and circuit boards for phones and computers. Tiny patterns are etched into silicon and other materials to create the pathways that make electronics work.

Protected and Exposed. Artists coat the metal with a waxy or plastic layer called a resist, then scratch away the design. The acid eats only where the metal is exposed, leaving the protected parts untouched.
