Dark mask face. European polecats have a striking dark brown coat with a pale belly and a dark mask across their face that makes them look like tiny bandits. This cool pattern helps them blend into forests and shadows where they hunt.

Seriously stinky spray. When threatened or marking territory, European polecats release a particularly foul-smelling liquid from special glands. This stink is so powerful that it warns other animals to stay away from their home.

Compact and powerful. Unlike other weasel relatives, European polecats have shorter, stockier bodies with extra-strong skulls and teeth. They're less acrobatic than other mustelids, but their powerful build makes them fierce hunters of small creatures.

Forest and mountain dwellers. These polecats live across Europe and in the Rif mountains in North Africa, hunting in forests, woodlands, and grasslands. They prefer places with plenty of small prey like rodents, rabbits, and frogs.

Rare color variations. While most European polecats are dark brown, unusual color mutations sometimes happen in nature, creating albinos (all white), leucists (pale), and other color patterns.
