Castles in the sky. A Fata Morgana is a special kind of mirage where you see towers, buildings, and landscapes floating above the horizon. They look so real and detailed that people used to think they were actual magic or fairy kingdoms.

Most famous in Italy. These amazing mirages are most commonly seen near the Strait of Messina between Italy and Sicily. Sailors and people on shore would spot them and call them fairy castles created by Morgan le Fay, a magical character from old legends.

Bent light tricks your eyes. Fata Morganas happen because of a trick called refraction, where light bends as it passes through layers of air at different temperatures. Hot air near the ocean surface and cooler air above bend light in special ways that create these upside-down and stacked images.

It's all in the layers. These mirages appear in a thin band right above the horizon because of extreme temperature differences between air layers, like an invisible stack of glass panes bending light. The effect only works when you're looking at just the right angle and distance.

Named after legend. The name 'Fata Morgana' comes from Morgan le Fay, a powerful enchantress in King Arthur stories. People thought she conjured these ghostly castles with her magic, so they gave the mirage her name.
